Questions People Ask

Is it legal to make your own vinyl record?

Yes, for private use. We hold an MCPS-PRS Limited Manufacture licence that covers commercial songs on records made for personal use. Pictures are different: use your own photos or artwork, not album covers or band logos. The details are on our copyright page.

What can't I put on my record?

A copy of an existing album, track for track: our licence covers your own mix of songs, not a reproduction. And records with commercial songs are for private, personal use, not stock to sell.

Can I get a custom vinyl album made?

Yes. A 12-inch classic vinyl record plays on both sides, and the table above shows how much fits on each side of every size. We send it tracked, in the UK and worldwide.

Who makes the record?

We do, in our own workshop, where we have cut one-off records since 2016. VinylArt Co was started by a mastering engineer and a fine-art printer who wanted one-off vinyl to be easy to order. A person checks your files before anything is cut.

Are lathe-cut records any good?

They are real records that play on a normal turntable (all but the experimental 5-inch picture disc). Each one is cut straight into the disc, one at a time, rather than pressed from a stamper, and we set up every cut for the best sound that size can give. We have been cutting records since 2016.

Can I make a DIY vinyl record at home?

Not one that plays well: cutting a record takes a cutting lathe and a lot of practice. The part you can do yourself is the creative part. Create your own vinyl record here, with your songs and your picture, and we cut it. Think of us as your custom vinyl maker: you design it, we cut it.

Can you press your own vinyl?

Pressing needs a factory, metal stampers and usually hundreds of copies. We don't press. We cut each record on a lathe, so one copy is a normal order. The difference is explained on our lathe cut vs pressed vinyl page.

Can I turn an mp3 into a vinyl record?

Yes. Upload MP3, WAV, FLAC or M4A files, or build a playlist by searching for songs and make a vinyl mixtape. Every record is mastered for vinyl before it is cut, so a phone recording or an mp3 still comes out as a proper record.

Can you play a picture disc?

Yes. A picture disc plays on a normal turntable like any record (all but the experimental 5-inch picture disc). The music is on one side, with your picture showing through the clear vinyl. The other side is a white matt layer you can write on with a permanent marker.

How much does it cost to make your own record?

The smallest is the 5 Inch Picture Disc. Each size's starting price is in the table above, in your currency, and the product page shows the price for your record as you build it. Delivery is added at checkout, where you see the full price before you pay.

Is there a minimum order?

No. The minimum order is one record. Factory pressing usually needs hundreds of copies; lathe-cutting doesn't.

When will it be dispatched?

Every record is cut to order. Estimated dispatch Wednesday 4 November for an order placed now, and each product page shows its own estimate.

Can I hear it before you cut it?

Yes. At checkout you can choose to hear your record's audio and approve it before we cut it. It adds about a day. It checks the sound and the running order of the songs you chose; the songs themselves are set when you order.

How is it delivered?

By tracked delivery. At checkout you choose Value or Express for your address and see the cost before you pay.
